  10. I could really use some help on the following problem.

  12. I'm running Windows 95 on a Gateway P-120 with a Sportster 33.6
  13. installed internally.  Everything worked fine until a day or two ago.
  14. Then, for no apparent reason, the modem started refusing to connect to
  15. 28.8 modems.  If I do an atz and then attempt a connection, the
  16. following happens:

  18. 1)  Negotiation is heard
  19. 2)  Soft hiss of data transfer
  20. 3)  Negotiation is heard
  21. 4)  My modem hangs up (and does not report NO CARRIER)
  22.  
  23. When things worked, I would get a connect right after 1 and 2 above.

  25. I've tried connecting to multiple 28.8 modems, but they all fail.  If I
  26. connect to a 14.4 modem, it works fine (in fact, that is how I'm logged
  27. in now).  It appears that something in the 28.8 negotiation process
  28. isn't working anymore.  Oddly, if I force my modem to connect at 2400
  29. (by doing an AT&N3), I get a 1200 connection, and I don't hear the 28.8
  30. negotiation tones.

  32. I'm tearing my hair out over this.  Does anybody have any ideas?
